Hecate's core business started out as corporate theatre and the company developed a succession of Aids shows over the 11 years. In the 11 years that Viva Hecate has been in business, the company has won 5 Gold Loerie Awards.
Due to the desperate need to educate the people of this country on the issues relating to HIV and Aids and the power and ability of experiential theatre to communicate so effectively, Viva Hecate developed six shows to meet this need, two of which are currently running.
“Khululeka – Breaking the Silence”
“Siyaphila – We Are Alive!”
These productions are set to reach all South Africans everywhere, irrespective of gender or age, race, colour and language group, social and financial standing, educational level, religious beliefs, or sexual orientation.
“Khululeka – Break the Silence” is a generic HIV & Aids play developed by Viva Hecate Productions in 2005. After nearly two years touring to various corporate companies, The 46664 Foundation saw the play at the 2007 South African Aids Conference in Durban and after a series of meetings and previews was chosen to be the official vehicle of communication within the 46664 outreach program with the mandate of reaching as many school children as possible using the play in conjunction with the very powerful 46664 message: “It’s In Our Hands”.
Since August 2007 the play has reached well over 60 000 children in Gauteng and was performed for Nelson Mandela at the Nelson Mandela Foundation in 2007 and for the 46664 World Aids Day concert artists in November 2007. In 2009 we are set to take “Siyaphila! We Are Alive” to mining communities and children around the mines of a major mining company. The feedback from the students has been phenomenal and heart wrenching. Only by being in their schools and hearing first hand what the future of tomorrow is dealing with today did we really get the message it really is in our hands, and the silence must be broken around HIV & Aids if we are to see tomorrow with the children of this country.
